How bad is Lancashire's batting.
they are seriously in trouble here and I wondered who was the last team to get relegated after winning the championship, if there has been one.
I think it is very much on the cards as they can't post any decent scores and if we were all honest this has been their weakness for a while and not addressed.
Andy {Ed003's Note - Yorkshire not so long ago if I remember right,it's not looking good for them }

Old chesnut I am afraid but I need some help.
I have been challenged to provide my top test team from across all nations. Five bowlers, five batters.
Only rule is they have to be from your era (1980 onwards for me), players you have actually seen play on either TV or at a ground. I have thought it over and I have 10 names I am happy with, just short of an opener.
My team is below, any thoughts?
Gordon Greenidge (West Indies)
Vacant
Brian Lara (West Indies)
Sachin Tendulkar (India)
Viv Richards (West Indies)
Adam Gilchrist (Australia)
Ian Botham (England)
Wasim Akram (Pakistan)
Shane Warne (Australia)
Michael Holding (West Indies)
Glenn McGrath (Australia) Intersting post. Personally would go with Steve Waugh as the 5th batter. With those in your side and with such strength in batting you have the option of opening with either Waugh or Tendulkar who have opened at test level or the option of using Gilchrist who opened in the one day game. As I said with such a strong line up you could afford a gamble on Gilchrist opening.
I'd also like to see Derek Underwood in the side. Him bowling in tandem with Warney would have been a intereting site. Who would I drop from the bowlers, well as good as he is I'd leave McGrath out. Excellent I know but you still have the raw pace and nagging line of Holding, pace and brilliance of Akram and th magical aura of Botham.
Irish Red Dog Good post.
Have to say I did consider moving players around but I suppose I didn't want square pegs in round holes so to speak. I do completely agree Gilchrist was a destructive one day opener but what about Test Matches? Could he do it there too?
Underwood was quality but before my time, I suppose the only point would be that he turns it the same way at Warney but he wasn't deadly Derek for nothing.
Steve Waugh not getting in? Crazy eh? Likewise Ricky Ponting? Also Malcolm Marshall as well for the bowlers? Curtley Ambrose? Sort of debate you could have down the pub for hours I would move Sachin to opener and Dravid to 3 or 4, after all he is the second highest run scorer of all time. Didn't even consider Dravid, can't even begin to think how he slipped through the net.
The more I have thought about it the more I think I will fill the top of the order slot with Sunil Gavaskar. He just about creeps into my era and although his average is a fraction below Dravid it is still above 50 and he is a recognised opener. Also Sunil scored his runs when, perhaps, the standard of bowling was higher than it is today. Can't imagine too many of todays players fancing a West Indies quartet of 1980's vintage. Obviously with a team of greats it is tempting to select batsman full of flair and scoring potential...but let's suppose the opposition are strong too ( I know you said pick the BEST therefore the oppo cannot be as good BUT) get Geoffrey opening - he will definitely keep one end
solid no matter what happens at the other end

Hey Ed001!
Can I ask you I take it the Aussie "Big Bash" turned out to be a Little Bash as I hardly heard anything about it? Do you know how the English lads got on playing in it?
Also Is there any real reason so many of our guys were never bought for this years IPL? Is it because of Englands scheldule of are we really not rated at all?
Cheers

Well, lunch day 1, not lookin good for our indian friends, Sachin may have been unlucky, may have been missing the stumps, too high.
Eds, could i have your opinion on this storm in a teacup that the indian media is whipping up, last night the groundsmen at the WACA were seen havin a beer and a muck about around the pitch, i mean they work on the test pitch to make it the best it possibly can, the indian media is saying its a disgrace, bring the game into disripute, (people in glass houses). It's been in the mid thirties here all week, you work your b****cks off all day in the heat, so when your finished you crack open a few cans and relax with your workmates. Can't see the problem myself.
It's 4 for 77 as i write this, india should be bowled out by stumps, going on sunday with my son, hope for a good days cricket. Eds, love your work.
West Aussie Red. {Ed001's Note - sounds like a case of taking the heat off how bad the performance was to me.}

Third test starts tomorrow, aussies v india, pitch looks like its gonna be a pearler for the bowlers, hope we win the toss and send the indians in, gonna try and get there over the weekend (if my job list from the missus isn't to big).
Listening to a few indian journalists, there seems to be a bit of disharmony in the camp, not good travellers the indians.
Anyway, heres to an aussie win, but on the other hand if i do get to the cricket over the next few days i would be honoured to see the little master get that hundredth hundred at the WACA, the bloke has been class on and off the field for two decades, good luck Sachin, not as much luck for the rest of the team, and CMON AUSSIE CMON.

Whilst listening to Ronnie Irani and his high and mighty opinions against Luis Suarez on Talksport this morning, I wonder whether he has ever questioned his great mate and hero Graham Gooch about his captaincy of the first England rebel Tour of Apartheid South Africa in 1982. Is cricket different Ronnie? Touring South Africa at one of the most terrible periods of the disgusting Apartheid era. What a disgrace. The double standards of Irani are a disgrace.

Hi ed..after how many games can a bowler be officially ranked or get a decent ranking? I'm wondering this to see when Vernon Philander will start appearing on the rank list {Ed003's Note - A ranking is over the whole career, but I guess you mean his rating (?),which would be his current stats,i'm sure they start from the very 1st game the player plays(which also has a not so straight forward system like the teams ratings), hope that helps. I believe he means a bowler cant go top of rankings after a game, so what is the criteria. Like it could be a minimum of 15 games

Just seen score for Sehwag v WI, congratulations to the guy. Have to ask, as never saw the innings bar last 5 overs, but was it poor bowling, flat pitch or funny betting in the background?
Keith {Ed003's Note - Only saw the last bit myself mate,a remarkable achievement whether it was a flat pitch or not, regarding betting it's ashame we now have to question these moments } It is a shame, as like (I think) Sir Ian Botham said, it's got to the stage we are going to question every dropped catch, especially the easy ones! I remember an over (think is was Australia) and a spinner did three no balls in an over once and looking back, makes you think as spinners hardly ever do them and three in one over seems unheard of, was there something funny going on there? Cricket was 'my' sport as a kid, even told I could have played for England, so what has gone on, saddens me entirely!
Looks like WI won't even get 150!!
Keith Speaking about betting and fixing ....guys i assure u every match every over every ball is fixed! including the toss is fixed... i know this because a friend of mine gives me tips about a lot of important matches who s gonna win or who will score how many runs...
for eg. he texted me befoe worldcup 2011 final about srilanka batting first and scoring 260-280 runs. next sehwag ang sachin get out quickly gambhir plays well till 70-80 and dhoni yuvraj finish the match! my god m telling u every ball every match every move is fixed ! even english or australian cricketers are not immune form this oh nd he also had told me dhoni was losing the toss....
and so from that day i stopped following cricket {Ed003's Note - The game has so very many variables that anything could look a bit dodgy now a seed has been sowed in our heads with the spot fixing scandal, personally I think your friend got lucky in a 50/50 regarding the toss of a coin } Man edd--003 m sure u havent seen the final 2011 if u have seen it u would remember dhoni actually won the toss but he himself complained after toss that he couldnot listen what srilanka captain called due to crowd noise!! now thats incredible i mean i live in india and i know how the pitches here are... first batting = win is the situation in day night match here! still after winning toss he asks for retoss!
mate i used to stay just near bombay or mumbai as its called now just 3 hrs drive from there and am tellin u it is the hub of match fixing all over the world! i know the probabilities and all the theories and i was happy when dhoni won the toss believe me but it iwas incredible he asked for retoss!! i was literally baffled...
match fixing in ipl final would be still ok! but world cup final...mind boggling
am telling u a cricketer like sehwag or dhoni(not taking sachin tendulkar s name because he s god here) would make more losing a match than rather winning it,...
unofficial fighure suggest 1000 crores of money worth on final that day (makes 14,196,0000 British Pounds) !!!!! even once he had told me result of england aus match beforehand i actually dont remember which...!) {Ed003's Note - I was just giving a general response mate,I hear what your saying about the toss, BUT I am not having "every match every over every ball is fixed" you are saying all cricketers are cheats, that is totally unfair on all the sportsmen and women for that matter who play the game legally,I am not niave I do realise that a lot more "names" are under investigation, but as I say,not all of them. Thanks for the reply though. } I believe alot of sport is fixed, there is too much money involved these days
To the above poster, was the pak ind match fixed as tendulkar was so plumb it was unbelievable that hawkeye showed it missing and the amount of catches pak dropped of him
I await your reply Sorry mate for very late reply dont get much on here because not much activity on this site...but i do think match fixing thing gets on very regularly i am sure all the players do it or else they wont be in the team ... i remember when i was a kid say 15 yr or so that time india had won asia cup against pakistan in final when we required 3 runs of 2 balls and a very talented allrounder named hrishikesh kanetkar hit a boundry and won it for us... but u know what happens he gets dropped for next series and never plays again for india! some yrs back i read in a newspaper about it which said he was dropped because azharuddin who was captain then had a large amount of money riding on tha match for pakistan winning...and so he never played for us again! there can be lots of examples like these
its either u get alnog with the system and never say anything about it or else u get involved in it so u dont get dropped...u have to paly along with it...it is so much deep rooted in cricket .
i think i read once that player had written a biography in which he stated how all players are involved in fixing from horse racing to manchester united! i seriously dont know i m really skeptical about it but well that seriously is something to think about
coming to india pakistan matches what can u expect!
all match fixers =indians who have very high criminal records in india and have settled either in dubai or pakistan because theose countries dont have extradition treaty with india and indo-pak matches get all time high viewers here! i think much higher no of viewrs than liverpool-man u or barca-real or say river-boca because sheer no of ppl in these countries emotions are riding high and these matches get a religious colouring/(muslim-hindu) now with all this what would u expect to happen!
edd pls publish this! have put a lots of efforts! lol

Hi Ed!

A few days ago Swann said that he doesn't see ODI's as having a future and I must say I agree with him. I don't understand what ODI's are about as they aren't as exciting as 20/20's with not as much big hitting and it doesn't have any of the tactics which makes test cricket great. I always have the cricket on the tele during an England (and Wales) test match or 20/20 game but I can't remember the last time I watched any of a ODI or cared about the result.
Welsh Dragon I Think that One day cricket will never go away it still exciting as it was before I don't understand the big issue, all you have to do is look at the crowds it attracts i.e in the India V West Indies series that is currently ongoing ( the stadiums are nearly full. I think a huge issue at the moment is England at the moment are struugling big time in 50 over cricket, we have no consistant team and are on a bad run but when we turn the corner im sure all the hype will be back.
Ro. No, I don't think its because England are struggling, if they put out a first team then they would win most of their games but they put out weaker teams to rest players for test matches. I just think that it isn't as good anymore and that the game has moved on. It may just be me but I much prefer to watch 20/20 or tests.
Welsh Dragon I agree that 20/20 is so much more preferable to watch but we never put out a weak team in this years World Cup did we? Again that proved England have major work to do in 50 over cricket. In the 50 over world cup England had just played, and won an Ashes series in Australia, then played a 7 game ODI series against them and then went straight to India for the world cup. I know they are professional sportsmen but they were away for at least 5 months as the Ashes started at the beginning of November and they went out of the WC on 26th march. If I was them I would definately want to get home by then and this would translate to poor performances on the pitch.
Welsh Dragon {Ed003's Note - I think I'm right in saying the domestic 40 over competition might become a 50 over competition in the current review, to help improvement in that format of the game. ) We should surely not be playing pointless Cricket in Dubai then?
Ro The messing around of the limited overs formats of domestic competition has always been a bugbear - how can they continue to mess around with it as much as they have? Stick to 50 and 20 overs plus four day matches. {Ed003's Note - I agree with you }

Hey Ed! hope ur well, whats ur prediction for the Aussie Vrs Kiwi Test which starts tonight? {Ed003's Note - I'd expect an Aussie win,how about you ? } Yes me too. Shame about Mitchell Johnson-though he hasn't been having the best of times with the ball I know
Puzzled {Ed003's Note - His injury is only a shame if you are an Aussie fan ;-) } As an Aussie fan, it's the best thing that Johnson's injured
he leaks runs at about 4-5 an over (which is good for a t20, not so for a test match)
i expect the aussies to win 2-0, both test matches by about 100 runs or 3 wickets (depending on the toss) Hey Ed, I agree with you especially after last night/this morning the Aussies should win however what a shame once again McCullum & Ryder fail to shine with the bat! If NZ have anychance these guys have to step up2 the mark in test cricket you would think. Ponting steadies the ship again.. He is

It looks as if SA are in the driving seat to whitewash the Aussies :) Do you know how many points they will recieve & will that put any dent in Englands lead at the top?
Thanks
Ro {Ed003's Note - Sorry for the delay Ro,Not sure mate but as it stands now(going into the last day) it's finely balanced,I've got a feeling the Aussies may just scrape a victory,I'll look into the points system I dont think it's as quite straightforward as X amount for a victory, all depends on who you play(their ranking). Maybe someone else could help us ? } Thanks again Ed! Hopefully someone will I have never really fully understood how the points system works either.

Hi Ed , Can you clear up for me Aussie Big Bash which is coming up , how popular do u think it will be & has it anychance of being a rival to the IPL? Also do u know what is the rules as regards to signing overseas players i.e English, SA & Indian Players because as far as I can see the only half decent overseas T20 players that have signed up are Chris Gayle, Matt Prior & Paul Collingwood.
Thanks
Ro. {Ed003's Note -Ro, I think each team can sign 2 overseas players, can't see it rivalling the IPL purely because of the huge finances involved with the IPL. } Thanks Ed! Yes but can we trust ANY results in the IPL
Puzzled My answer to that is yes! I have watched every single IPL game in the last 3 yrs it quite simply awsome! from the players who play in it to the atmophere of the crowd, Surley the Guys that are playing in the IPL get paid a massive amount of money therefore is it worth it fixing games? If your answer is "No" then we get into a whole new ball game of the worlds top players fixing games! your not just talking Asian players fixing but SA, Australian & even English palyers. The Majority of Indian players get paid Premiership sort of wages even without the IPL taken into account and with sponsership deals etc they make a mint so why would they jepordise that ? it doesn't make sence. Its just my opinion I think nowafter Modhi it possibly can & should be trusted, I also think there is alot of bitterness from other countrys and rightly so from the money & success of the IPL as they have missed a trick especially to bring on there own country up & coming younsters. whether it's played in India, SA, Jamaca or England its played by the worlds best players & gives us viewers brilliant entertainment is that not what we all look for? Well you mention missing a trick to bring on a country's up and coming youngsters..for what...bish bash..wallop..we want to bring the up and coming youngsters on for firstly county and then (for the few granted) test cricket...
if Indian/Pakistani audiences only want 20 over cricket let them get on with it
Puzzled I see where your coming from & do agree to an extent what you are saying but from an English point of view is it surely not an window where they can have valuable playing time in India ( not Pakistan for obvious reasons & Sri Lanka as England do well there). ODI's & especially Test Cricket will never go away & will always be the peak of playing for your country but 20-20 has brought a new spark and new audience to cricket which is what we need! Yes I'm sure it's brought a new audience but this form of the game is so far removed from 'real' cricket I doubt that they will ever move over to the longer variety of the game - so the new audience is just for the enrichment of the IPL and nowt else
Puzzled 20-20 is part of Cricket now so I think 'real' traditional 'boring' cricket has had a massive shot in the arm we should be embracing it not complaining about it. Its all about money these day & cricket has had to some how come inline with other major sports.

Rejoice ! Guilty verdicts in the spot-fixing trial.
So those two are proven guilty and the first two
pleaded guilty. Now we need meaningful sentences.
Also - that crooked agent was claiming six or seven of the Pakistani team were up for it.. Odd names were mentioned I believe... They should be dealt
with. If there is no proof to do it on a legal basis then the Pakistan cricker authorities could do it
- simply by not playing those players again. No
need to publicly say what the reason is and therefore
no chance of legal claims.
We will now see if those authorities want to stamp out this fiddling amongst some of their members.
Better to have a weaker (but cleaner) side for a
year or two than have the whole cricketing world
giving knowing nods and winks after every result

Why indian batsman like dravid, tendulkar so difficult to get out...
Because in street cricket we play with rules which u have never heard and that make u bat with utmost concentration..
Here are some rules
One tip one hand...a ball hit on ground if caught by one hand is out. So guy has to play shots on ground.
Y time off side beat out...just like basball. This makes batsman to use his feet well and reach to the ball and never miss it...
If ball goes into someone,s courtyard, you are out...play on ground and if u want to play in air, play it straight down the road.. Always safe to play with straight bat...

india lost to england because england have better swing bowlers to utilize conditions, a very tidy off spinner in swann who bowls old orthodox flight bowling, excellent fielding. Indians play in india on flat pitches where you can just stand and deliever. Lions like sehwag, gambhir, raina become cats in testing conditions. Tendulkar played decent innings, dravid was superb. But what can 2 batsman do alone. now indians in order to take revenge would make spinning tracks when england tour india in couple of months... My unnamed friend i am sure India wont make spinning tracks.
The fans, the media, former players have been shouting at the top of thier voice for spinning tracks but so far the BCCI+Curators have not come up with any such ACTUAL REAL SPINNING TRACK.........as usual this will be a series ruled by the Batsmen.

Fair play to Hampshire for fighting tooth and nail to deny Warickshire victory after all ready being relegated to the second division,3 down over a hundred behind already down, last day of season,Hampshire could've folded like a deck of cards, play like that next season and you'll be straight back up. I know it wasn't to do us,Lancashire any favours, but your players, especially Michael Carberry and even more so Neil Mckenzie will always be remembered in Lancs for a long long, time. Jonson6

No doubt Tendulkar would've been class in any era. But theirs protection for batsmen like their never was in the late 70's early to mid 80's. He's been hit enough times on the head with bouncer's that might have put him have caused him serious injury like Gatting getting one from i think Malcolm Marshall who was the most skillfull bowler i ever did see. Its Jimmy Anderson who's got Tendulkar's number more then any of the greats mentioned in the post. His strike rate of getting him out in tests is by far the best around, considering the great Shane Warne only got him 3 in 18 times he played against him. Jimmy's got one of the best strike rates against Tendulkar in o.d. i's as well. Close between Sachin and Lara, i know Sachin has more Test century's then Lara but his not the number of double centurys with his highest ever test score of 248 not out and Lara passing that score more then once. Think both would've excelled in any generation but i prefered to watch Lara bat in his pomp then Sachin although still one of the all time greats who would defo make my best 11 team of all time. I do love Raul Dravid as well, the ultimate honest, fair play, dignified sportsman going an example to all sports persons he's shown over the years. All time favourite cricketer Wasin Akram,Lancashire and Pakistani ledgened, the best left arm pace man of all time and one of the best of all time re of what armed they bowled with. Both in test and one dayer's. What a 20/20 player he would have been. Could clear the ropes with ease and his toe crushing yolker's were seriously serious. Jonson6 Personally I preferred Lara in his pomp than Tendulkar, but due to the longevity of Tendalkar's career maybe I give him the edge.
Dravid - "honest and fair play" even he admitted that he may have edged to the ball at The Oval (2nd innings) but failed to walk, whereas Gilchrist always walked!
